ABOUT THE FELLOW OF ILCA DESIGNATION

The Fellow of the International Lactation Consultant Association (FILCA) designation recognizes significant voluntary commitment to ILCA and also the professional excellence and achievements of leaders and mentors in the field of lactation consultancy.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

ILCA members who meet the following criteria are encouraged to submit their Fellow of ILCA (FILCA) application for consideration.

  • Current membership in good standing with the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) for at least ten (10) years
  • Certified as an IBCLC for ten (10) or more years. A candidate may be a retired IBCLC so long as the candidate meets the ten (10) year requirement
    NOTE: Unsure if you meet eligibility criteria one and/or two? Please contact membership@ilca.org to verify if needed before completing the application process.
  • Volunteer commitment to a national or international organization serving the lactation consultant profession. This is defined as unpaid work for ILCA or your national or regional lactation consultant organization. Examples of eligible volunteer experience include:
    • ILCA Board Member for at least three (3) years
    • National professional organization board member for at least three (3) years
    • International volunteer leadership positions held for at least four (4) years
    • National volunteer leadership positions held for at least four (4) years
    • Regional leadership positions held for at least four (4) years
    • Active ILCA committee member for at least five (5) years
  • Pursuit of professional and personal development of self and others since becoming an IBCLC;  can include the acquisition of additional skills and the development of others in the field of lactation consulting through mentorship
  • Significant contribution to the field of lactation consulting, including one or more of the following:
    • Published article or commentary in a peer-reviewed journal or online resource or book chapter
      • If the article is accepted and “in press,” it must be scheduled for a publication and so cited. Include a review and formal reference citation
    • Lactation-related education program, booklet, or module development. Please include program, booklet, or module details
      • If the educational supplement is accepted and “in press,” it must be scheduled for a publication and so cited
    • Lactation-related development aid, such as video, photos, slides, or breastfeeding devices. If available, include a review and formal reference citation
      • If accepted and “in press,” or not yet released, it must be scheduled for publication or release and specifically cited with contact information. Please include publication name and issue date or industry release name and release date
  • Published author of a book or chapter on lactation or breastfeeding
    • Include a book review and formal reference citation. If accepted and “in press,” or not yet released, it must be scheduled for a publication and so cited
  • Legislative committees; BFHI task forces; breastfeeding policy committees; country, public health, and state policy committees; or other types of activism
    • List your participation role and results of such activities
  • Research conducted with published manuscript
    • Include formal reference citation. If accepted and “in press” it must be scheduled for a publication and so cited
  • Any additional accomplishments, not listed above, that are noteworthy in advancing the profession
