ILCA at the 77th World Health Assembly

ILCA had a busy and productive week at the World Health Assembly, 27 May – 1 June, in Geneva. ILCA’s delegates were Zoe Faulkner, BA(HONS), IBCLC, member of the Board of Directors; Maryse Arendt, IBCLC, a long-time delegate for ILCA, and Katie Pereira-Kotze, PhD, researcher/consultant and ILCA member.

ILCA co-hosted a side event on digital marketing of breastmilk substitutes that was well-attended by over 90 delegates, and included several subject matter experts speaking about the danger and dominance of digital marketing of BMS, as well as a panel of member state representative speaking about their experiences; Zoe did an excellent job moderating this event.

During the WHA, Brazil announced their support for the guidance on digital marketing, with 26 other countries, and their plans to submit a resolution on the guidance in 2025. Our delegates gave oral statements to the Assembly on five different agenda items, emphasizing how breastfeeding support and skilled lactation care can impact many areas. Our team networked with delegates from member states and from other non-governmental organizations. And Katie even participated in a 4.2K run as part of the “Walk the Talk: Health for All Challenge,” which aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle, for a healthier humanity. Thank you to all for your hard work!
