The Japanese Lactation Consultant Association (JALC), an ILCA
affiliate, has translated ILCA’s publication Evidence
Based Guidelines for the First 14 Days into Japanese. Copies

ILCA’S new liaison to the United Nations in New York,
USA is Susan Burger PhD, IBCLC from New York City. Susan replaces
Carol Smith who ably served ILCA in this position for some years
before moving out of the area.
Isabelle Cote, BSN, IBCLC from Montreal, Canada has been appointed
ILCA’s liaison to Codex Alimentarius, Montreal, a new

Ireland's
First Baby Friendly Hospital
ILCA member Genevieve Becker who is National Co-ordinator of
the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative in Ireland reports that
Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, County Galway has been
designated as a Baby Friendly Hospital. This is the first hospital
in Ireland to meet the criteria of the WHO/UNICEF Baby Friendly
Hospital Initiative.
Asia-Pacific Conference on Breastfeeding (APCON) in New Delhi,
India
Participants from 38 countries attended APCON which aimed to
promote implementation of the Global Strategy for Infant and
Young Child Feeding (GSIYCF)

Scholarship for 2004 ILCA Conference Applications
are invited for an ILCA scholarship to partially fund attendance
at the 2004 conference. The scholarship, a grant from the
Eli Hormann
Memorial Fund is based on financial need and the applicant
must be an ILCA member. Email info@ilca.org

it from the ILCA website www.ilca.org. Deadline for receipt
of completed applications at the ILCA office is March 30.
