| Scope of Practice Update
By Becky Mannel, ILCA President
As was announced at the ILCA Annual General Meeting in August, the ILCA Scope of Practice Task Force did an excellent job in drafting a Model Scope of Practice. The ILCA Board of Directors approved the text of this draft, which was then sent to IBLCE for review by the IBLCE Scope of Practice Task Force. These 2 task forces are now working together to agree on a final document that can be approved by both organizations.
We know many of our members are eagerly awaiting release of this Scope of Practice. The ILCA Board of Directors is pleased at the substantial progress that has been made to craft a Scope of Practice that will have global utility. This is a matter of great importance to our profession. We appreciate the patience of our members, and IBCLCs worldwide, as ILCA and IBLCE continue to productively collaborate on this document. When a final Scope of Practice is approved, we will send it to all ILCA members, and post it on the ILCA website.

In Honor/In Memory
It's the end of the year, which means remembering good friends, paying honor to mentors, and making end-of-the-year contributions for tax deductions. You can support the work of ILCA and meet all of those goals through an honoring or memorial gift to the Scholarship Fund. Gifts of $50 or more allow a brief tribute statement of 20 words or less to be published quarterly in the eGlobe. You can easily include these gifts with your membership renewal. Remember your friends, mentors, and loved ones. ILCA is a 501(c)(3) organization, so U.S. donations are tax deductible. Check the tax laws for your country to see if a donation may qualify.
Fellows of the International Lactation Consultant Association (FILCA)
Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2007 for the initial round of the ILCA Fellow program. Further information and applications can be found on the Members only side of the ILCA website.
Don't qualify but still interested? Consider serving as a member of the FILCA Review Committee.
Curriculum Project Call for Member Input
ILCA’s Professional Development Committee has appointed a Subcommittee to develop a curriculum for the preparation of lactation consultant students who are not existing health professionals and have no prior breastfeeding/lactation education or practice. The committee needs your views on the knowledge and skills needed to practice as a lactation consultant.
Please s hare your thoughts on ILCA’s Discussion Board under the topic entitled “Development of a Model Curriculum”. If you prefer to submit your comments privately, please send an e-mail to info@ilca.org indicating in the subject line that you are writing about the "ILCA Draft Curriculum." Deadline for member comments is December 21.
Each One Reach One 2007 Award Goes To Taiwan
ILCA's 2007 "Each One Reach One" (EORO) Award goes to Chao-Huei Chen, who works in the Department of Pediatrics at Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. Bringing in 6 ILCA memberships wins her registration for our 2008 Conference in Las Vegas. Any ILCA member who introduces 5 or more colleagues/friends to ILCA will be eligible for this valuable prize. Our cutoff date is June 1, 2008 so there's still plenty of time to get in gear! What a great way to help ILCA grow, and win a registration to our 2009 Conference.
ILCA Partners Program Sisters Become Partners
With continued increases in worldwide membership, ILCA's Board of Directors has updated the Sister Program into the ILCA Partners Program. This better reflects a desire for partnership rather than mere financial sponsorship and strengthening of professional relationships across the globe. Partners depend on each other, and the financial aspect is just one part of a healthy partnership. Sharing goals, feedback and support are also important!
ILCA is currently seeking groups or individuals interested in being the sponsored Partner. Sponsored Partners gain access to our website, receive the Journal of Human Lactation, and enjoy all the other benefits available to ILCA members. Please encourage colleagues to apply for this program.
For more information, visit the ILCA Website or contact Roberta Graham de Escobedo at roberta@ilca.org.
World Breastfeeding Week 2008 Theme Announced
“Mother Support: Going for the Gold” is the theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2008. In conjunction with the Olympics next August, WBW 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months, and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or
beyond.
For more information, visit http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org.
Career Mart Resource
A benefit of ILCA membership is access to listings of job openings in our Career Mart. Last month, there were 14 jobs listed for IBCLCs. Don’t forget the Career Mart as a good place to search for and post positions for IBCLCs.
News about ILCA and IBLCE
ILCA is pleased to release to its members a description of the meeting held in April 2007 between representatives of the Boards of both ILCA and IBLCE. There are issues of interest to both groups, and IBCLCs worldwide, that still require further discussion. We are pleased that lines of communication have been opened, and widened. The report may be downloaded from the ILCA website.

Breastfeeding and HIV for World AIDS Day
In recognition of World AIDS Day, December 1, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) has released a statement praising a new WHO technical consultation. New evidence from this consultation clarifies that HIV-positive mothers should breastfeed their babies exclusively for the first 6 months of life, and continue partially breastfeeding after 6 months unless conditions are already in place to show that replacement feeding is safe. To read the entire statement, visit http://www.waba.org.my/pdf/worldAIDSday2007.pdf. ILCA is a Core Partner of WABA.
New Toolkit on Corporate Health Benefits Plans Includes Lactation
A new document outlining best practices for health benefits plans provided to employees makes great strides by including breastfeeding related services. The National Business Group on Health (U.S.) has released Investing in Maternal and Child Health: An Employer's Toolkit, which presents strategies and tools employers can use to improve the health of children; adolescents; and women before, during, and after pregnancy. Coverage for services by IBCLCs and rental/purchase of electric breast pumps are specified. Although created specifically for the U.S. market, the authors note the need to provide appropriate health care to all employees of multinational corporations, giving this document a global application.
The toolkit may be downloaded from the National Business Group on Health website: www.businessgrouphealth.org/healthtopics
/maternalchild/investing.

The Red Rock Resort – The ‘Flip Side’ of Las Vegas
By Roberta Graham de Escobedo
As a non-drinker with zero interest in gambling and casinos, I wondered about Las Vegas as the ideal ILCA conference site. While attending my first ILCA Board of Directors meeting at the Red Rock Resort in November, I had a chance to walk through the conference facility. I've attended every ILCA International conference since 1995, with the exception of Sydney, so I've seen many a conference venue. However, this gorgeously decorated conference center, filled with artistic touches and surrounded by the Red Rock Mountains overwhelmed me with the natural beauty of its setting.[more]

Breastfeeding in the Hospital: Mothers, Midwives and the Production Line By Fiona Dykes
This insightful book details how breastfeeding, a “culturally mediated, bio-psychosocial activity” became a clock-watching, regulated activity with the focus on the mother as the unit of production. The author shows how the influence of the factory and “efficiency” entered the working days of hospital staff and the frustrations this brings to their attempts to support the breastfeeding mother.
