WHO Publication: Kangaroo Mother Care

This 54-page WHO publication provides evidence for kangaroo mother care as it relates to morbidity, mortality, growth, and thermal control of infants, as well as guidelines for implementing kangaroo mother care practices in clinical settings. New Independent Study Module on the International Code

If you need CERPs, ILCA's independent study modules are the ideal solution! The first of several new study modules is now available and grants E CERPs . The new module, The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes: What It Means for Mothers and Babies Worldwide , is based on the monograph of the same title which was written for ILCA by Helen Armstrong and Ellen Sokol.

IBCLC Licensure Task Force

The ILCA Board of Directors has created a task force to study the issue of IBCLC licensure in the United States , with Marsha Walker and Karen Zeretzke as co-chairs. Becky Mannel, ILCA President-elect, will serve as the Board liaison. Additional task force members are needed. [more]

AAP Revises SIDS Prevention Recommendations

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued an updated policy statement , 'The Changing Concept of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: Diagnostic Coding Shifts, Controversies Regarding the Sleeping Environment, and New Variables to Consider in Reducing'. Responses to AAP Statement by Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, U.S. Breastfeeding Committee and LLLI

The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and La Leche League International immediately issued statements in response to the revised AAP guidelines.

Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Response

Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine president Nancy Wight, M.D. noted that "Contrary to even the recommendations of its own Section on Breastfeeding, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released an ill-advised and ill-informed statement from its Task Force on SIDS (1) (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Recommendations that advise against parent-infant bed-sharing and support the generic use of pacifiers imply a "truly astounding triumph of ethnocentric assumptions over common sense and medical research."
