| Call for Nominations for ILCA Board
The future of ILCA depends on active participation - become involved NOW!
ILCA members are invited to submit names to the Nominations Committee for the Office of Treasurer and Director of Professional Development and Director of External Affairs.
These three positions are due to be installed at the 2008 Annual General Meeting of the Association to be held in July, 2008 in Red Rock Nevada USA, after election by IBCLC-members in March/April 2008.
The Director of External Affairs position will fall vacant in 2008 as Angela Smith moves to the position of President. Both the Treasurer and Director of Professional Development joined the Board by appointment in 2006. Now that the appointed term is up, these positions must be filled by you, the membership, as a whole.
If you have been an ILCA member in good standing for the last two (2) consecutive years, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and have some expertise in any of these areas you may want to nominate yourself for one of these positions. Previous leadership experience, especially working in an ILCA committee or as a member of your affiliate or other governing committee, is preferred.
This is your opportunity to get involved with ILCA. Further information and nomination forms are available on the Members Only area of the website. Contact Nominations Committee Chair Sue Cox at suecox@ilca.org for more information. Nominations close November 30, 2007.
ILCA Board Appoints New Director of Membership
The ILCA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Roberta Graham de Escobedo to the position of Director of Membership and Affiliate Services. The position was vacated recently by Donna Ron, who resigned for personal reasons. We thank Donna for her year of service to ILCA and welcome Roberta as she steps up to serve the remaining 2 years of this term. For more information on Roberta, please go to the ILCA website.
New Education Mission Statement
ILCA has replaced the Education Standards with a new, more global Educational Mission. The new mission encompasses the initiatives and principles that ILCA supports, and encourages providers of lactation education to meet several criteria regarding their programs. The former Education Standards were restrictive in nature and addressed the single topic of credentialing. The new Educational Mission describes standards which the association encourages educators to meet, while not mandating their actions. The new Educational Mission is available on the ILCA website.
Accreditation
Application Available
The International Lactation Education
Accreditation Council (ILEAC) finalized the new Accreditation
Application and review process when the Council met in San Diego.
There is now a two-step process for applying for accreditation.
The applicant first completes a Request for Accreditation Review
and after receiving confirmation that they are eligible, they
will be invited to complete the Accreditation Application. More
information is available at the ILCA
Website, scroll down the page to "Applicants for Accreditation".

New Program: Fellows of the International Lactation Consultant Association
The Board of Directors of ILCA are pleased to announce the creation of the Fellows of the International Lactation Consultant Association program. It has been a long-time goal of the ILCA Strategic Plan, and members of our profession, to establish a program that would suitably recognize career-long achievements of the leaders and mentors in the field of lactation consultancy. Further information and the application form are available at the ILCA Website on the Members Only area.
Discussion Board - Recognition for Advanced Practice
We need your input! Should ILCA, the professional association for IBCLCs, develop and offer programs permitting specialists in our field to be recognized for their added expertise? For example, an IBCLC with years of experience working with mothers and babies in the NICU could earn recognition for that specialized skill. This not only recognizes the leaders in our field, it permits administrators, managers - and parents to better appreciate the specialized care an IBCLC can provide. For more information and/or to give us your opinion, go to the ILCA On-Line Discussion Board
2007 World Breastfeeding Week Wrap-up

Teaching Breasts for WBW
Barb Chaney and Rita Blake, IBCLCs at Mercy Hospital Anderson in Cincinnati, Ohio celebrated World Breastfeeding Week with a display in the lobby of our hospital, where passers-by could register for a doorprize and pick up literature about breastfeeding. They posted WBW flyers throughout the hospital and the local newspaper ran an article about our hospital's celebration.
Rita and Barb also baked "breast themed" goodies each day of the week for their staff at the Family Birth Center (a Baby-Friendly facility). The staff favorite for several years has been the breast cake. Not to pass up a teachable moment, Barb notes that "as I presented it to the staff at the nurse's station, I told them, 'A nursing mother's breasts are supposed to look like this.' Then I put maraschino cherries in place of the Hershey Kisses for nipples and asked the staff, 'What would you do if they looked like this?' When they answered correctly they were allowed to have their cake and eat it too!"
JHL August 2007 Issue Highlight: "Newborn In-Hospital Weight Loss"
Healthy, full-term newborn babies tend to lose weight during the first few days after their birth. A groundbreaking new study published in the latest issue of the Journal of Human Lactation explores the reasons why certain newborns lose more (or less) than others and what conclusions can be drawn from the research. REAL MEN at the 2007 ILCA Conference
 | | Mark Bastian left and Andy Cook, right | By Andy B. Cook, proud husband and Associate IBCLC (by association) to Renee Cook, RN, CCE, RTSC, CLE, IBCLC - Close To My Heart, Phelan, California.
I spent most of last week in the bookstore at the ILCA conference
in San Diego, CA. My wife loves working with breastfeeding moms
and I support that labor of love in every way that I can. Volunteering
to work at the conference seemed like a crazy way to extend my
support but it turned out to be one of those ideas that worked
out exceptionally well. For my efforts I received a tee shirt
that declares, "Real men go to breastfeeding conferences." (But
that wasn't anywhere near ALL that I brought home with me from
