Each One Reach One
Congratulations to Gini Baker, winner of the 2008 Each One Reach One contest. As a Course Director, Gini brought in 35 new ILCA members. Gini won a free registration to the 2009 Conference, which she has donated to help another colleague attend.

In 2007, no one qualified for the Individual Award by bringing in 5 or more new members, though we thank those members who participated. The Each One Reach One campaign brought in 227 new ILCA memberships - a 5% increase over last year.

Above and Beyond Award
Maureen Fjeld , outgoing ILCA Delegate to the IBLCE Board (a position appointed by ILCA), was awarded this year’s Above and Beyond Award fto recognize her exemplary and dedicated service on behalf of ILCA and IBCLCs worldwide for her role in improving communications between the certifying body (IBLCE) and the professional association (ILCA). Maureen receives a full registration for the 2009 ILCA Conference.

Research Committee Awards
Each year, the Research Committee awards several competitive items at the Annual Conference.

The Annual Research Grant for 2008 was a $10,000 award granted to Sallie R. Permar, MD, Ph.D of Children's Hospital, Boston, for her project "Cytomegalovirus-specific cellular immunity in breast milk."

"Xena Grossman"
Two awards were made for the best posters presented at the conference. The winner for the Research Poster was Xena Grossman for "Hospital Education in Lactation Practices (Project HELP). The winners for the Project Poster were Lucia Jenkins and Mary Foley for "The First USA Baby Café: Development of a Hospital-linked Community Lactation Program."
"Lucia Jenkins and Mary Foley"
"Judith Ann Frilingos and Mary Ann Kotyk"

The Research Committee also coordinated the Conference Research Presentation Award, a new award sponsored in 2008 by Barbara Wilson-Clay, Kay Hoover, and Rebecca Mannel to help beginning researchers to bring their work to publication. The two $500 awards were given to Rachelle Lessen for "Prenatal Counseling for Families in the Fetal Heart Program" and Mary Ann Kotyk et al. for "Screening Tool for Poor Suck: When to Refer."

"Rachelle Lessen"

Congratulations to all of these exemplary researchers!

JHL Best Article for 2007
Membership awarded the best article appearing in the Journal of Human Lactation in 2007 to Patricia Martens and Linda Romphf for " Factors Associated with Newborn In-Hospital Weight Loss: Comparisons by Feeding Method, Demographics, and Birthing Procedures," which appeared in the August 2007 issue.

JHL’s Impact Factor Increases in Thomson Reuters’ Journal Citation Reports ®
We are pleased to announce that the Journal of Human Lactation (JHL) increased its impact factor from last year, as reported in the recently released 2007 Journal Citation Reports ® (JCR). With an impact factor of 1.359 in 2007 (up from 1.133 in 2006), JHL is now ranked 6 th out of 46 journals in the Nursing category (up from 15/36 in 2006) and 32 nd out of 60 journals in the Obstetrics & Gynecology category (up from 39/59 in 2006). A journal's impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which a journal's articles in a previous two-year period have been cited in a given year. JHL is ranked the highest of the six journals published by SAGE that are ranked in the Nursing category!

The JCR, published by Thomson Reuters (formerly known as ISI), is a comprehensive and unique resource for journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals worldwide. Coverage is both multidisciplinary and international, incorporating journals from over 3,300 publishers in 60 nations. To be included among the journals in the JCR is indeed a great accomplishment.

You can help assure JHL's continued success in the JCR and help build its editorial quality by

  • Citing recent JHL articles in your own writing, when relevant;
  • Recommending recent JHL articles to colleagues for their own research and writing;
  • Keeping a list of the articles JHL published in the two prior years when doing reviews to make sure that all relevant articles from JHL are cited in forthcoming articles;
  • Recruiting promising articles from colleagues and presenters at conferences and poster sessions;
  • Signing up for JHL 'Email Alerts' and forwarding interesting article links to colleagues.
