Kangaroo Care Poem for World Breastfeeding Week
The following poem was written by Sandy Brown, IBCLC, for the WBW celebrations at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Covington, Kentucky. Please address requests to use or reprint to Sandy at rnsandib@aol.com
KANGAROO CARE
Oh tiny baby a few minutes old,
All bundled up to fight off the cold.
Kangaroo care or skin-to-skin,
Much more resembles the past world within.
Before I take a needed rest,
I want to place you on my chest.
This will calm you and help you grow,
Keep you safe from things unknown.
This world is so big to one so small,
My breathing and heartbeat you can recall.
Skin-to-skin and close to my heart,
In my memory forever will never part.
Although life's not easy, I can attest,
Yours will be healthier when fed at the breast.
This new phenomenon called Kangaroo Care,
Has been with us forever; we weren't aware.
So rest little one close to my heart,
And know you are loved right from the start.
Sandra D. Brown, RN, IBCLC

TSA Relaxes Rules, Allows Breastmilk As Carry-on
As of August 4, the U.S. Transportation Security Agency is modifying the rules concerning expressed breastmilk. Breastmilk has now been classified as a ?medical necessity.? Mothers may bring as much expressed breastmilk into the airplane cabin as they desire and no longer need to be accompanied by their infant. Mothers must inform checkpoint staff of the milk prior to screening, but do not need to taste or open containers. Full details are at their website, http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/sop/index.shtm, or by phoning TSA Public Affairs at 571-227-2829.
These new rules should apply to international travel originating in the U.S. It may also lead to similar relaxation of rules at other national and international airports around the globe
ILCA members may wish to check with their own national airport authorities to inquire if and when similar changes may go into effect.

By Beryl Wheeler, IBCLC
There was great excitement in Kigali Rwanda, when
an email from Health-e-learning offered us on-line
access to the Lactation Exam Practice Module. This
was a first for Rwanda, opening a new style of learning
for the candidates plus assisting me (the teacher)
with more options for teaching and making learning
more innovative and global. [more]
