Pre-certification education of lactation consultants, particularly at the university level, received a great deal of attention at ILCA's strategic planning meeting held in April 2008 at which representatives from IBLCE participated. Strategic goals that resulted from the discussion included the development of a model university curriculum and the restructuring and redirection of our profession's pre-certification education accreditation process.
ILCA established a grant for development of a model curriculum that is slated to be completed by the middle of 2009. The goal is to have a model available that universities can use as a guide in developing programs to provide didactic and clinical instruction in lactation. Announcement of the grant recipients and updates on the project will appear in future issues of the eGlobe.
In order to meet the needs of accrediting university-based programs, ILCA and IBLCE formed a task force to make recommendations on a structure that will enable our profession to continue to recognize short-term certificate courses while also providing accreditation for formal university-based programs. New applications for accreditation will be reviewed under the new structure, which is expected to be in place by September/October of 2008.
The long-term goal for accreditation has always been to establish an independent accreditation organization, which is vital for establishing autonomy between our accreditation, certification, and professional association. The International Lactation Education Accreditation Council (ILEAC) established the profession's accreditation standards and began the process of accrediting short-term certificate courses. This effort by the talented volunteer members of ILEAC established groundwork for moving forward with a new, expanded, and independent accreditation structure.
ILCA wishes to recognize the significant contributions of everyone who has been involved in the International Lactation Education Accreditation Council over the past decade. Special thanks to 2008 ILEAC members Molly Pessl, Gini Baker, Jan Barger, Marina Green, Michele Griswold, Cindy Carter, Marta-Gouth-Gumberger and to other ILCA members who contributed to this effort!

ILCA Partners Program - Urgent Call for Sponsors!
Recently we have "spotlighted" a set of Partners participants, allowing us all to learn about how this program enriches both the sponsoring Partner and the sponsored person. ILCA Partnership becomes a lifeline to many who would not be able to join otherwise. We thank those who are currently sponsoring someone, and also encourage more ILCA members and affiliates to consider joining their ranks. In particular, ILCA Partners Program applicants from Israel and Rwanda are waiting anxiously for someone to step up and make their membership and participation in ILCA a reality.
Please consider becoming an ILCA PARTNER. For more information contact Glenna Thurston, Membership Coordinator, at glennathurston@ilca.org.

Rwanda Prepares for Exam
Once again, Beryl Wheeler is preparing a set of candidates for the IBLCE Exam. Nurses, midwives, and an obstetrician at the King Faisal Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda are members of this year’s team. Another member of the group is Musa-Asibi Onyioza from Nigeria, who is “on mission” in Rwanda. She hopes to pass the IBCLC exam and return to Nigeria to begin developing a pool of IBCLCs and work towards official acceptance of the BFHI. She is also interested in becoming an ILCA member and finding an ILCA Partner.

Committee Meetings
Volunteering is a very important part of ILCA and USLCA because without volunteers we would have no Boards and no committees to assist you in your professional development. On Wednesday evening there will be USLCA chapter meetings and an Education Forum. Over the next four days there will be meetings of all committees and you are particularly invited to attend those being held between 12.30 and 1.30 pm. on Friday with your boxed lunch. A Fun Way To Get CERPs
By Kay Hoover
One year several IBCLCs who were recertifying by CERPs emailed me to ask about conferences where they could get CERPs. All the local conferences were over for the year, so I suggested that we get together to write exam questions. Each person only needed a few CERPs. A group of 5 of us did just that. It was fun. We started out with a few photos, because we thought they might be easier to write questions for. Then we ventured into other questions.
This year several IBCLCs mentioned that they would like to study together, so we meet every other month for 3 hours in the evening. We decide on two topics for the evening and we work together on questions. Those who attend have said it is helpful for them in their studies.
A question earns 1 CERP, a photo alone earns 2 CERPs, and a photo with questions earns 3 CERPs. Photos must be accompanied by a photo release form. Current IBCLCs can work together and both earn CERPs. Further details, tips for writing questions, a photo release form and the application form can be found at http://americas.iblce.org/documents/

NEW! Quick Reference for the Lactation Professional
This handy pocket-sized book is an excellent resource for new and experienced IBCLCs, hospital, public health and clinic staff, and is especially helpful for preceptors or those studying for the IBCLC exam. Based on the Counseling the Nursing Mother text (also available in the ILCA bookstore), each chapter discusses both the supportive and technical aspects of breastfeeding help and provides a tutorial at the end of each chapter with questions and scenarios to challenge the learner. The appendices are especially helpful with useful documents, such as the ILCA Standards of Practice, IBLCE Code of Ethics, and other useful tools for the IBCLC in one location.
