World Breastfeeding Week 2008
Mother Support: Going for the Gold
Breastfeeding has long been referred to as "the gold standard," that by which all else is to be measured. Think of all the mothers you have helped "go for the gold" and all the different kinds of support mothers need to reach their goals–from their healthcare providers, from their family, from their employer, from the community, from the government, and especially from YOU! This year's ILCA World Breastfeeding Week kit will focus on the role we all play in helping mothers and babies "go for the gold." The ILCA bookstore will have many new promotional items with this year's theme to help make your outreach educational as well as memorable! A Listserv will be sent to all ILCA members announcing when the Kit and promotional items are ready for purchase. Contact Kendall Cox, the WBW Coordinator ( kendallcox@ilca.org) with questions or ideas.

When mothers and babies breastfeed, everyone wins!

Inspiring Strategic Planning Meeting
by Becky Mannel
President, ILCA Board of Directors

As your ILCA President, I am pleased to report that the 2-day strategic planning meeting recently held prior to our April board meeting was a huge success. For the first time we brought in outside participants along with the board of directors in hopes of having a wide range of viewpoints and perspectives at the table. For this organization to continue to lead our profession, we need a powerful, active vision that challenges us to take action. We need a plan that we can get excited about! [more]

Call For Pictures!
ILCA is seeking pictures from members across the globe of mothers, babies, and members of all ethnicities to draw from when we print new brochures, website banners, etc. Of particular interest would be pictures of lactation consultants instructing mothers, pictures that somehow depict research being done in the area of breastfeeding, babies in NICU being breastfed, and anything that would portray leadership and/or advocacy for breastfeeding.

If you have any pictures that meet the following specifications, please submit them to info@ilca.org along with a signed photo release form anyone who is clearly depicted in the picture. Photos should be submitted at the largest possible size, preferably 8” x 10” or larger, as TIFF or JPEG with a resolution of 300 dpi or greater.

My Trip to the Dominican Republic
Jean Kouba RN IBCLC, Canada

In Aguas Negras, I set up a makeshift breastfeeding clinic. With the aid of a paper flip chart and my flawed Spanish we were able to get into quite a dialogue and I presented breastmilk as a 'medicine' for the baby, as illness and infant death is the main concern for these mothers. [more]

Short duration of skin-to-skin contact: Effects on growth and breastfeeding
Boo, N-Y, & Jamli, F.M.
Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, 2007, 43:831-836.

Reviewed by Pamela Hill, PhD, RN, CBE, FAAN, ILCA Research Committee

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is defined as continuous skin-to-skin contact (STSC) between a mother and her newborn low-birthweight infant (< 2500g). A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted in Malaysia to compare weight gain and head growth in very-low-birthweight (<1501g) infants with or without exposure to short duration of STSC during their stay in the NICU. The median duration of STSC was 1.0 hour/day and a mean total duration of 11.3 hours (SD = 5.9). [more]

Case Studies in Breastfeeding: Problem Solving Skills and Strategies
By Karin Cadwell, PhD, RN, IBCLC and Cindy Turner-Maffei, MA, IBCLC

This new text combines logic, wisdom, and theory in order to develop a consultative framework and present illustrative case studies designed to increase the practitioner's knowledge about managing complex breastfeeding cases. It includes tables and charts as well as color prints. A review of this text appeared in the Journal of Human Lactation, May 2004.

Impact of Birthing Practices on Breastfeeding: Protecting the Mother and Baby Continuum
By Mary Kroeger with Linda Smith

This is an essential resource for all who work with mothers and newborns. It spans both developed and developing country settings and thus is also written for global policy setters with the goal of keeping childbirth as natural as possible, ensuring that both mother and newborn are ready to optimally breastfeed.

This text was the winner of the ACNM (American College of Nurse-Midwives) Book of the Year Award 2003! A review of this text appeared in the Journal of Human Lactation, February 2004.

Breastfeeding A-Z: Terminology and Telephone Triage
By Karin Cadwell and Cynthia Turner-Maffei (2006)

Answering breastfeeding questions on the telephone is a complex process. Telephone Triage for Breastfeeding provides lactation consultants, nurses, physicians, and nutritionists with evidence-based information on breastfeeding issues that may present as telephone calls. This succinct reference covers the triage guides for common problems such as breast pain, engorgement, concerns about milk supply, and also contains an encyclopedia of terms relevant to breastfeeding in both plain language and in medical terminology. The key words direct further questions and provide the support person with information in order to clarify the situation and decide the appropriate urgency and disposition of the case.

A review of this book is posted in the Members Only section of the ILCA website. After logging in, ILCA members may view all of our print and multimedia reviews, located in the Education Materials section of our website. The review for this book appears under February 2007
