Breastfeeding Handbook for Physicians is a brand new lactation reference text for healthcare professionals. Developed as a collaborative effort between the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), this excellent tool provides physicians, residents, lactation consultants, nurses, and other health care professionals with valuable information on breastfeeding physiology as well as clinical practice guidelines.

Letters To The Editor

Origin of statement in ILCA's Clinical Guidelines

To the Editor:

ILCA's Clinical Guidelines for the Establishment of Exclusive Breastfeeding is a good tool for teaching and ensuring that maternity policies are evidence-based. I am interested to know the origin of one statement in Strategy Two:

".... Signs of milk transfer...

* nipple elongated.... after feeding. [more]

The Editors of Clinical Guidelines respond:

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding the origin of the statement in Strategy Two of ILCA's Clinical Guidelines for the Establishment of Exclusive Breastfeeding that refers to the nipple elongated but not pinched or abraded after feeding.

Send your letters to ILCA eGlobe editor Beverley Rae at beverleyrae@ilca.org. [more]

ILCA Discussion Board

These two threads on the Discussion Board invite networking from colleagues who have been there! Log in to share your experience. We invite you to use this forum for dialogue with fellow members.

In ASK ILCA :

'I am starting a breastfeeding clinic through our hospital and am applying for grant money. Has anyone started/run a clinic? I need ideas about cost, policies, basically everything'.

In HOSPITAL-BASED IBCLCs : 'I am working with a huge Health System of 13 hospitals. The System is planning a 15,000 annual delivery Woman's Center. The administration is asking for lactation consultant staffing guidelines and REQUIRING something documented in the professional literature, preferably from AAP, AWHONN or ACOG. The future of the lactation program rests with me having this information to give them. Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated'.

2006 ILCA Conference

The 2006 ILCA Conference in Philadelphia. USA is only three months away! Don't miss the Early Bird deadline - May 15!

Registering for the Conference

Registration brochures were mailed to ILCA members in February. A limited supply of brochures is available from the ILCA office if additional copies are needed. The brochure is briefer than in previous years. All conference details are available on the ILCA website as well as in ILCA's online Personal Program Planner. In the Planner, you can review abstracts of all conference sessions, decide which tracks and concurrent sessions to select, and then print out your own personal itinerary to take to the conference. You may register either by mailing or faxing the completed registration form or online at http://guest.cvent.com/EVENTS/Info/Summary.aspx?e=f3ec9a9b-98f6-4991-b1d7-fb361391a751.

Clinical Day Features Diverse Skills

The 2006 Conference offers numerous opportunities to learn and refresh clinical skills, including clinical observations. The Clinical Day prior to the Main Conference offers four separate tracks, each with its own unique set of clinical skills. A Skills Rotation track offers the opportunity to observe seasoned IBCLCs working live with mothers and babies in a variety of circumstances. If you are interested in problem solving, select a track on either Slow Gaining Babies or Feeding Problems . If your focus is teaching parenting skills, select the track on Normal Newborns , featuring Dr. Harvey Karp's calming techniques.

The Main Conference also features several clinical topics. Concurrent sessions include case presentations on induced lactation as well as interesting and unusual lactation situations encountered in a hospital outpatient setting. Other concurrent clinical topics include nighttime nursing, craniosacral therapy, bariatric surgery, and hypnosis. On Saturday, Dr. Tieraona Low Dog will offer clinical tips on working with women who use herbal therapies and those with cultural diversity.

IBCLC Day

Celebrating IBCLC Day - March 1, 2006

Left to right: Robin Hirth, MEd,IBCLC; Chris Auer, RN, BSN, IBCLC; and Olga Tamayo, RN, MSN, IBCLC
Chris Auer, BSN, IBCLC sent this report and photo of the celebration at her hospital in Cincinnati , USA . Read more reports on the IBCLC Day page at www.ilca.org .

At University Hospital we celebrated with a luncheon for the five IBCLCs and a table and poster display outside the cafeteria. More than 35 health care professionals stopped to ask about the lactation program and the role of the IBCLC. Many parents and grandparents told us their breastfeeding stories. One set of grandparents had a very low birth weight baby in our nursery 6 months earlier and one new employee was the mother of a 1 lb 12 oz baby two years earlier. She was still grateful for the lactation support she received during that time. Thanks for the great Power Point presentation we could download from the ILCA website. Our poster was a concise explanation of the role of the IBCLC!'

Updating your Contact Information

Crystal Stearns, who headed the "Breastfeeding Book Recovery" project in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the United States , urges members to be sure ILCA has their current contact information. When so many members were displaced in Louisiana and Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, it was hard to find out who needed replacement books because very few people had updated their contact information. Keeping your information current is as easy as sending an email to info@ilca.org , or updating your profile on the ILCA website by logging into the Members Only area.
