The 2008 ILCA ballot for the election of Officers and Directors was released on February 18. The on-line process is quick and easy, and your vote is anonymous and secure. We encourage each ILCA member who is also an IBCLC to participate in this important election.

Please take the time to read the personal statements and to vote for the candidates of your choice by visiting http://www.ilca.org/08ballot.html. To cast your ballot, use the unique login information you received through the emailed ballot. If you experience any problems during the voting process or have any questions, please contact Amber Maxa at ambermaxa@ilca.org.

Voting closes on April 15, 2008. Successful candidates will be announced in May and the new directors will be installed at the Annual General Meeting at the ILCA Conference in July.

ILCA Responds to NYT Article
The article, "And Doula Makes Four," by Pamela Paul, which appeared in the Sunday, March 2 (2008) edition of the New York Times newspaper (USA) highlighted the importance of the IBCLC credential as a standard for care.  The ILCA Board sent a letter of thanks.

The deadline for submitting the proposals is April 1. Application forms for each grant are unique and are available on the ILCA website. For more information, please contact the Research Committee Chair, Joan E. Dodgson, PhD, MPH, RN at dodgson@hawaii.edu.

IBCLC Day March 5, 2008
Quality Breastfeeding Care: IBCLCs in Action

IBCLC Day was March 5th and some IBCLCs around the world are celebrating throughout March:

—For her work in breastfeeding, IBCLC Val Finigan will be awarded an MBE (Member of British Empire) from the Queen of England on March 19th. Val works with Pennine Acute Trust as Infant Feeding Coordinator. That's an IBCLC in Action! Congratulations to Val, who says she will wear her IBCLC badge with honor that day! Look for photos and a story in an upcoming eGlobe.

—Several employers are recognizing the IBCLCs on their staff.

—Some IBCLCs will be answering general questions and educating the community about the services an IBCLC offers through radio and television shows as well as writing articles for their local paper or the web.

We've received "IBCLCs in Action" photos from our global membership! If you have photos to send of your work or your IBCLC Day celebration, please forward them to Kendall Cox, IBCLC Day Coordinator, at kendallcox@ilca.org for inclusion in our IBCLC Day 2008 slideshow.

Some popular new resources have been added to the ILCA Bookstore, perfect whether you're celebrating IBCLC Day later this month or for any time of year–a nice gift for a colleague or for yourself!

Fellowship at WABA Headquarters Available
ILCA and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) are again offering an ILCA member the opportunity of an internship to travel and work with WABA on outreach and advocacy projects.

WABA is a global network of organisations and individuals dedicated to the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding. ILCA is a core partner in WABA. The time spent in Penang will enable the ILCA member to understand the relationship between these two organizations. ILCA and WABA will cover airfares and basic living costs for the time spent in Penang. To know more about their goals, structure and programmes, please visit their website at www.waba.org.

Applicants must have been a financial member of ILCA for a minimum of one year and demonstrate an interest in working in the setting of breastfeeding advocacy. Applicants should have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, and be computer literate.

Enquiries may be directed to Angela Smith, Director of External Affairs.

Deadline for applications is April 15, 2008. Please send a letter of interest with your Curriculum Vitae to Jim Smith, ILCA Executive Director, at the ILCA Office or email to jimsmith@ilca.org. [more]

The Effect of Prolonged and Exclusive Breast-Feeding on Dental Caries in Early School-Aged Children

Kramer, Vanilovich, Matush et al
Caries Research 2007;41:484-488

Review of Research by Anne Merewood, Research Committee

The objective of this study was to determine whether the children born at Baby-Friendly-style hospitals, and thus exclusively breastfed for longer, were, as a group, more or less likely to suffer dental caries than infants who were born at traditional hospitals, with poor exclusivity. This is one of several studies to come out of the PROBIT research in Belarus in the mid-1990's. [more]
