ILCA NEWS

New Position Paper on Breastfeeding and Work
The International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) Board of Directors is very proud to release the official ILCA “Position on Breastfeeding and Work.” You can visit the ILCA website to download a copy and use it for breastfeeding promotion and advocacy in your community. Hard copies on official ILCA position paper letterhead are available through the ILCA Bookstore.

The ILCA Board would like to express its profound appreciation to ILCA member Chris Mulford, who was lead author on this important position paper and directed its development. Chris has been extremely active in maternity protection issues on the global scene and brought incredible wisdom and expertise to this project. We would also like to thank the members of ILCA’s advisory board of medical professionals who reviewed it, along with the many, many ILCA members who provided important feedback at the public review and comment phase. Don't forget a caption! Get out your camera and let us hear from you by February 15th and we'll put together a nice collection of pictures showing quality breastfeeding care in action! Send your photos to Kendall Cox, the IBCLC Day Coordinator: kendallcox@ilca.org.

FILCA Applications - Final Call
ILCA has extended the application deadline for FILCA for one month:  you now have until January 31, 2008 to submit your application to join the inaugural class of Fellows of the International Lactation Consultant Association!  The end-of-the-year brings many busy responsibilities … but now you have a little breathing room to submit your materials. It will be the rare IBCLC who can add "FILCA" behind her name – be one of the first!

NEWS TO USE

Int’l Formula Council Wins 2007 ‘Falsie’ Award
The Center for Media and Democracy awarded the Bronze Medal “Falsie” award to the International Formula Council for egregious distortion of information on the health risks of formula feeding. The Falsies honor the year’s most “cynical, manipulative and just plain anti-democratic pollution of our information environment.”

The Center writes: “For portraying accurate health information as alarmism and intrusive marketing campaigns as “freedom” — not to mention helping to keep U.S. breastfeeding rates well below those of European countries — this Falsie’s for you, IFC!”

Read the entire announcement, with more details about the IFC’s award, at http://www.prwatch.org/falsies2007

New Document for Developing Policies for Hypoglycaemia
The UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative recently published a new guidance document for maternity units who are developing or amending polices which relate to the prevention and treatment of hypoglycaemia in newborns.

Most maternity units working towards Baby Friendly accreditation have found that it is necessary to address the issue of supplementation for breastfed babies at risk of hypoglycaemia. This guidance document includes a checklist to ensure the inclusion of all the key aspects of care, together with referenced background information and a sample flow chart. It can be downloaded from the Baby Friendly website at www.babyfriendly.org.uk/pdfs/hypo_policy.pdf.
