Curriculum Project Call for Member Input
ILCA's Professional Development Committee has appointed a Subcommittee to develop a curriculum for the preparation of lactation consultant students who are not existing health professionals and have no prior breastfeeding/lactation education or practice. The committee needs your views on the knowledge and skills needed to practice as a lactation consultant:
- What can we expect a lactation student to know and be able to do at the end of their education? What outcomes are expected?
- How can a lactation student gain the experiences that will provide the needed knowledge and skills, in particular the practical/clinical skills of lactation consultant practice?
- How can we determine if the student has achieved the required standard?
Share your thoughts on ILCA's Discussion Board under the topic entitled "Development of a Model Curriculum". If you prefer to submit your comments privately, please send an e-mail to info@ilca.org indicating in the subject line that you are writing about the "ILCA Draft Curriculum."
Deadline for member comments is December 10. [more]

Liaison Profile: Standing Committee on Nutrition
Rachelle Lessen represented ILCA at the 34th session of the United Nations System Standing Committee on Nutrition (SCN) in February 2007. The Standing Committee on Nutrition works to promote cooperation among UN agencies and partner organizations in support of community, national, regional, and international efforts to end malnutrition in all of its forms. UN members include UNICEF, UNAIDS, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Members also include representatives from national governments and non-governmental organizations such as ILCA. The committee meets annually.
The focus of the 2007 meeting was "Working together to achieve freedom from child hunger and undernutrition". Rachelle also attended a pre-session meeting of the Working Group on Breastfeeding and Complementary Feeding where revitalization of BFHI and the introduction of the WHO growth charts were discussed.
Call for Sister Applicants
ILCA offers the opportunity for an individual who is unable to join ILCA due to hardship experienced from dire social, economic or political circumstances to receive an ILCA membership. The program is designed to support Lactation Consultants by providing membership benefits and opportunities, networking, mentoring and support to become self-sufficient as an individual member. Through this program Lactation Consultants can be supported and promoted in their practice.
Several individuals and groups are ready and waiting to sponsor through this program. We would like to match them with an individual by the end of the year so the sponsored person can enjoy a full year of ILCA membership benefits!
If you have a colleague who may meet the above qualifications, please download an application from the ILCA website and forward it. Applications should be returned to the ILCA Office by December 15.
World Breastfeeding Week 2007
Several parts of the world celebrated World Breastfeeding Week during the month of October. Celebrations in Canada included a Breastfeeding Challenge, pictured here, hosted by the Newman Breastfeeding Clinic & Institute and Mom2Mom Toronto, where they had 26 babies breastfeeding at the same time. The day's events also included a charity fundraiser that, thanks to all the participants and organizers, was a great success!
If you have photos from your WBW events, send them to Kendall Cox, ILCA's
WBW coordinator, at kendallcox@ilca.org.

Thank You for the ILCA Scholarship
By Beryl Wheeler, Rwanda
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at ILCA for giving me the opportunity to attend my first ILCA conference, and my first visit to your very beautiful country.
I wanted to attend every session, they were all so interesting, and unfortunately it was not possible. However, the sessions I did attend proved very valuable, inspiring and thought-provoking. The benefits of attending the conference were many. All of the knowledge I gained is going to assist me in my teaching of future IBCLC's in Rwanda. In addition to new knowledge gained is the networking with people who share the same goal and vision of promoting and protecting breastfeeding. It was so good to meet with the people who have assisted me in the education of IBCLC's in Rwanda, and put faces to their names. It was also inspiring to meet many authors whose books I use for teaching.
I cannot thank you all enough for making my attendance at the conference possible. I love having all the sessions on CD to review and use as a resource.
I will never forget my time at the conference or the wonderful people I met.

They had to travel from Switzerland, to Germany, and then to Bucharest.

The Breastfeeding Atlas
By Barbara Wilson-Clay
and Kay Hoover
This 3rd edition of the popular clinical guide, The Breastfeeding
Atlas, is bigger and better, with an additional 64
new photographs, a new chapter on donor human milk, and
more. It comes with a DVD of short video clips to support
clinical practice. Both the earlier material and the additions
provide the IBCLC with evidence-based information applied
to clinical management of breastfeeding. It is also an
excellent preparation for the IBLCE exam. You will want
to keep this useful text on your desk.
The Diaper Diary
By Barbara Wilson-Clay and Kay Hoover
The Diaper Diary is 2-sided handout for parents in pads of 50. The front is an illustrated guide to infant output in the first week, written at an appropriately low literacy level to make it accessible to the majority of the general population. This tool is unsurpassed as a guide for parents, to enable them to identify the normal, or recognize when to seek help. Dads love it, too! The reverse enables the parents to record stools and wet diapers.
