| 2007 World Breastfeeding Week Kits Now Available!
ILCA's 2007 World Breastfeeding Week kits are now ready to order! You will not want to miss out on this year's wonderful theme that is perfect for celebrations in hospitals, WIC agencies, and communities. The 2007 World Breastfeeding Week theme from WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action) is "Breastfeeding: The 1st Hour--Save ONE million babies!" ILCA's WBW kit uses the theme, "Welcome Baby Softly" to focus on practical ways to provide a protective environment for babies and mothers. Babies use all five senses to get to know their mothers right from birth, and educators, health professionals, and families can all work to welcome babies softly during this important early time through uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the first hour or two after birth or for as long as the mother wishes.

Call for Lactation Case Studies
The Women's Health and Reproductive Nutrition (WHRN) Dietetic Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association publishes Lactation Case Studies quarterly. The main purpose of the Lactation Case Study feature column is to raise awareness of the roles of a lactation consultant. Case studies offer members of WHRN insight on real-life challenges to successful lactation. A secondary purpose of the column is to encourage WHRN members to consider obtaining advanced training and pursue certification as IBCLCs.
Case studies should be no longer than 1000 words. Tables or graphics that simplify the material are encouraged, but not necessary. Quarterly deadlines are the first of January, April, July and October. If you are interested, please contact Karen Peters (kpeters@breastfeedla.org ) for the Lactation Case Studies guidelines.
WHO Releases New Report on Long-term Effects of Breastfeeding
The WHO Department of Child and Adolescent Health recently released a new document, Evidence on the long-term effects of breastfeeding: systematic reviews and meta-analysis , in collaboration with the epidemiology unit in the University of Pelotas, Brazil. This systematic review and meta-analysis of studies assesses the association between breastfeeding and blood pressure, diabetes and related indicators, serum cholesterol, overweight and obesity, and intellectual performance. Subjects who were breastfed experienced lower mean blood pressure and total cholesterol, as well as higher performance in intelligence tests. Prevalence of overweight/obesity and type-2 diabetes was lower among breastfed subjects. All effects were statistically significant but for some outcomes their magnitude was relatively modest.
The document can be downloaded from the WHO Website at http://www.who.int/child-adolescent-health/publications/NUTRITION/ISBN_92_4_159523_0.htm
