| Happy IBCLC Day 2007!
IBCLC Day 2007 is here! The first Wednesday
in March (March 7th this year) is the official day set aside
to celebrate the unique care IBCLCs provide mothers and babies
around the world. We hope, whatever your plans, that you celebrate
the progress you've made in the past year--the mothers and babies
you've assisted, the colleagues whose awareness of breastfeeding
you've heightened, the students you've mentored and whose breastfeeding
support skills you've sharpened. We'd love to hear how you made
the day special. Please send your photos and articles to ILCA's
IBCLC Day Coordinator, Kendall Cox, at kendallcox@ilca.org.
Check the ILCA website and discussion board to see how other
IBCLCs are celebrating!
ILCA still has a host of IBCLC Day resources
to help you celebrate. Whether you have plans for a grand gathering
or want to celebrate in a smaller way, please take a moment
to visit the ILCA website at http://www.ilca.org/news/ibclcday.php
where you’ll find plenty of ideas and resources to assist
you in your planning. These include a sample news release and
proclamation, certificates of appreciation, and a sample letter
to send to healthcare providers. ILCA members also have additional
FREE downloadable materials available on the Members Only page
of the website. These include a promotional flyer for healthcare
providers, an informational flyer for new mothers, a business
card template, and other resources.

Membership Balloting in February for By-Laws,
Best of JHL
ILCA members are asked to vote on several
changes to the association’s by-laws and to choose the
best article from the Journal of Human Lactation in 2006. Members
electing to receive communications electronically should have
received an email and link to an on-line ballot; others should
have received paper ballots in the mail. If you have colleagues
that do not use the computer as their primary means of communication
from ILCA, please encourage them to contact ILCA at 919-861-5577
or info@ilca.com to ensure
we have correct mailing information. If you have questions concerning
the ballot, have not yet received a ballot, or have misplaced
your print or electronic ballot, contact the ILCA office at
+919-861-5577 or info@ilca.org.
By-Laws Changes
In general, the proposed by-laws changes address voting rights,
Board transition, and conflict of interest assurances. The ILCA
Board of Directors (ILCA BOD) has reviewed the proposed changes
to the By-Laws (the rules describing how our organization is
run), and passed a motion in favor of the revisions. The ILCA
Board encourages the ILCA membership to vote to ACCEPT the By-Laws
changes

New Research Explores
the Role of Ethnicity in Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Study
Researchers in the February, 2007, issue
of the Journal of Human Lactation, suggest that it's important
to fully understand how ethnicity affects breastfeeding counseling
so that nursing can be effectively promoted in a multiethnic
country like the U.S.[more]
Make a monetary
gift, get a tax deduction
Remember your friends and loved ones with
a contribution to ILCA, which is tax-deductible in the USA and
possibly other countries. Support ILCA’s Scholarship fund
through an honorary or memorial gift and help another IBCLC
attend the ILCA conference. Memorial or honorary gifts of $50
or more and brief tribute statements of 20 words or less will
be published quarterly in the eGlobe.
Donations in U.S. dollars may be mailed
to ILCA, 1500 Sunday Drive, Suite 102, Raleigh, North Carolina
27607, USA. For questions, please contact Kathyparkes@ilca.org.
ILCA is a diverse community, and while we can expect personal
beliefs to be reflected here because of the nature of tributes,
such tributes are not intended for social commentaries outside
the focus of lactation.

Knitted Breasts Make a Comeback in the UK
Lactation Consultants of Great Britain,
an ILCA Affiliate, are helping ILCA member Kate McFadden in
her quest to teach latch to new mothers. The Liverpool Women's
Hospital made an appeal for knitters to help them construct
‘knitted breasts’ to be used as models for teaching.
Their story was picked up by the BBC, and offers for breasts
have come in from the USA, Scotland, Ireland, and Holland. Lactation
Consultants of Great Britain (LCGB) have placed the pattern
for knitted breasts on their website, www.lcgb.org.
They are a free pdf download.
Knitted breasts have been around for
years. They are also for sale through the Australian
Breastfeeding Association, Southern Lakes Group

Breastfeeding
Management for the Clinician: Using the Evidence,
by Marsha Walker
This recent text by Marsha Walker provides guidelines
for evidence-based management of normal breastfeeding
and the trouble-shooting of breastfeeding challenges.
Refreshingly, each chapter concludes with a brief summary
headed: "The design in nature," grounding
the information in the normal - in what should be -
rather than the pathological. Each chapter also contains
useful boxes, tables and summaries for easy reference
in the clinical setting, or for study. An excellent
text for new IBCLCs or those preparing for the IBLCE
exam. Breastfeeding
Handbook for Physicians,
from AAP and ACOG
Another recent lactation reference text for healthcare
professionals. Developed as a collaborative effort
between the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and
the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
(ACOG), this excellent tool provides physicians, residents,
lactation consultants, nurses, and other health care
professionals with valuable information on breastfeeding
physiology as well as clinical practice guidelines.

Clinical
Sites for Interns
ILCA would like to assist aspiring lactation consultants
in locating sites for acquiring clinical experience.
If you know of sites that would be available to interns,
please contact ILCA’s Education Coordinator
at judilauwers@ilca.org.
A list of clinical sites will appear on ILCA’s
website as a resource to interns. Thank you for your
help in advancing the lactation consultant profession!
Clinical Practice Resources
Do you have breastfeeding policies,
procedures, parent education materials, class outlines,
and other documents you are willing to share with
colleagues? ILCA is developing a resource page to
assist members in clinical practice. Our profession
is rich with time-tested resources developed by seasoned
lactation consultants over the past twenty years.
Please help your colleagues avoid reinventing the
wheel. Thank you to those who already shared consent
forms, which the Professional Development Committee
is reviewing for posting on ILCA’s website.
Please send these other resources to support your
fellow lactation consultants. For questions, or to
send materials, please contact judilauwers@ilca.org.
